The biggest lake in Kyrgyzstan

The largest lake in Kyrgyzstan and Central Asia — Issyk-Kul. The total volume of water of the Issyk-Kul lake — 1738 km2, its average depth-278 m, maximum depth-668 m, the coastline stretches for 688 km, the length of the largest lake of Kyrgyzstan from the North to the South — 58 km, and from West to East is 182 km away.

Lake Issyk-Kul located at an altitude of 1609 m above sea level between the ridges of the Northern Tien-Shan: Terskey Ala-too and Kungei Ala-too. Issyk-Kul is one of the largest mountain lakes in the world.

The largest lake of Kyrgyzstan is powered by water more than eighty rivers, but none of them carries its water back, so the water in the lake is salty (salinity — 5,90%). The ancient name of the lake — “ACE-Kul” — «Salty lake” speaks for itself, the water here is not potable. The present name of the lake — “Issyk-Kul lake” is translated from Kyrgyz as the “Hot lake”. It is also logical — the lake never freezes (even in the depths of winter and severe frosts), due to the considerable depth of the water does not become completely cool. In July and August, the water warms up to +18−20°, and in winter cools to + 4,2−5,0°.

For the first time Issyk-Kul is mentioned in Chinese Chronicles of the end of the second century BC where it is called warm sea (Same high). Scientific study of the lake began only in the nineteenth century by Russian scientists, one of whom was Nikolai Przhevalsky, who bequeathed to bury him on the shore of Issyk-Kul.

Issyk-Kul lake — a lake of incredible beauty. The water here is clear, but the bright sun can change the color of the water of the lake from dark blue to pale blue tones. On the North shore of the lake to enjoy the magnificent view of snow-capped mountains.

Basin the biggest lake of Central Asia, surrounded by powerful mountain ranges from all sides, was for a long time distinctive and inaccessible region of Kyrgyzstan. Now through the boom gorge here is the road. Also in the basin are 2 airports: international airport Tamchy and Cholpon-ATA.

Among tourists the most popular places near the Northern coast of Issyk-Kul lake are the settlements — Bosteri, Issyk Kul, Cholpon ATA, Sary-Oy, Tamchi, Chon-Sary-Oy and near South — tamgha and Kadzhi-say.
