In the sky, flying over Flores, you can see a bright turquoise spot that stands out against the dark green covering the island. This is one of three crater lakes of Kelimutu, which is closely interwoven with the legends and beliefs of local residents.
Kelimutu lake located in the volcano on the island of Flores (the height of 1639 m.), which belongs to the Small Eastern Indonesian Sunda Islands. The volcano last erupted in 1968, after which no signs of activity. After the eruption the magma was formed trench-colderi, in which water from precipitation forms three lakes.
What is the famous lake Kelimutu? Not even the fact that they are colorful, and the fact that the lake is constantly changing color. For example, the black lake in a few years becomes turquoise, then red, then green. This variability is explained by the presence in water of dissolved minerals of different nature. Chemical reaction between them and lead to dynamic great Kelimutu. Green — is sulfuric and hydrochloric acid, red – the result of the reaction of hydrogen sulfide with iron, although in recent years the water of the red lake darkens, and now has become almost black. As you can see from the photos, the two lakes are at a distance of a few meters, and yet their depths contain different minerals, respectively, and they are painted in different colors.
Representatives of the local tribe Leo tell the legend of Kelimutu. According to this legend, the lake sent the souls of the dead. In the red lake of souls live old men in green — the souls of the dead young, and white — the souls of children. In another embodiment, at red lake are sinners and murderers, in a green – young people, turquoise – the old men and the righteous. Europeans find it difficult to understand the philosophy of the tribe of Leo, though they distribute the soul and even claim that the change of color is said that spirits living in the lakes, I was angry.
The official names of the lakes are as follows: on the West of the volcano (at a distance from others) — the Resource-ATA-Bupu (lake of old people), the other two — the Resource-LSA-Muri-Koog-tai (lake boys and girls) and the Resource-ATA Polo (enchanted lake).
Residents of Flores believe that the souls of the dead people fall into the lake. The souls of old men who have lived a worthy life go to the lake, which has a calm and deep dark green color, it is called the Lake of old people. The souls of innocent young people go to the lake rocking a bright turquoise color, which is called the Lake of young Men and women. But the souls of the wicked go into the lake of dark-brown color, which is called the Lake of Evil souls. The lake of young Men and women and the Lake of Evil souls have a common wall of the crater, which symbolizes the thin line between innocence and evil. The lake is a few old men in the party and symbolizes the wisdom that comes with age. Locals say that if live will razgneviti the souls of the dead, the lake will change its color. Especially often changing color lake of young Men and women, say that for the last twenty-five years the lake changed colour twelve times.
Of course, scientists have their own explanation to the phenomenon of Kelimutu, they claim that the lake is rich in special minerals that change color depending on environmental conditions and underground activity. But, residents of Flores are still inclined to adhere to their point of view and the most travelers that come here share the beliefs of the residents. Here, indeed, a special mystical atmosphere and the feeling of absolute calm and silence which makes you lower your voice, slow down and think about the eternal…
