The largest lake in Kyrgyzstan and Central Asia — Issyk-Kul. The total volume of water of the Issyk-Kul lake — 1738 km2, its average depth-278 m, maximum depth-668 m, the coastline stretches for 688 km, the length of the largest lake of Kyrgyzstan from the North to the South — 58 km, and from West to East is 182 km away.
Lake Issyk-Kul located at an altitude of 1609 m above sea level between the ridges of the Northern Tien-Shan: Terskey Ala-too and Kungei Ala-too. Issyk-Kul is one of the largest mountain lakes in the world.
The largest lake of Kyrgyzstan is powered by water more than eighty rivers, but none of them carries its water back, so the water in the lake is salty (salinity — 5,90%). The ancient name of the lake — “ACE-Kul” — «Salty lake” speaks for itself, the water here is not potable. The present name of the lake — “Issyk-Kul lake” is translated from Kyrgyz as the “Hot lake”. It is also logical — the lake never freezes (even in the depths of winter and severe frosts), due to the considerable depth of the water does not become completely cool.
