The biggest lake in Kyrgyzstan

The largest lake in Kyrgyzstan and Central Asia — Issyk-Kul. The total volume of water of the Issyk-Kul lake — 1738 km2, its average depth-278 m, maximum depth-668 m, the coastline stretches for 688 km, the length of the largest lake of Kyrgyzstan from the North to the South — 58 km, and from West to East is 182 km away.

Lake Issyk-Kul located at an altitude of 1609 m above sea level between the ridges of the Northern Tien-Shan: Terskey Ala-too and Kungei Ala-too. Issyk-Kul is one of the largest mountain lakes in the world.

The ancient name of the lake — “ACE-Kul” — «Salty lake” speaks for itself, the water here is not potable. The present name of the lake — “Issyk-Kul lake” is translated from Kyrgyz as the “Hot lake”. It is also logical — the lake never freezes (even in the depths of winter and severe frosts), due to the considerable depth of the water does not become completely cool.
